Cold Reading Classes In San Antonio
You're job Is to do the very best you can. Perpare. Make strong choices, commit, and train.
Train often, create, and put in the work.
Most people would probably agree that acting is subjective. One director may love a choice that another director hates. The problem is, everybody tends to think their opinion is more important than the next person’s.
That’s exactly why I think one of the best things an actor can do is get on camera consistently, watch the footage back, and start developing their own awareness.
At Dope Creative Studios in San Antonio, we offer on-camera audition practice several times a week. We call these sessions The Mocks.
Actors can show up during the scheduled time, work on audition material, get on camera, and leave when they’re finished—or stick around and work for the entire session. You can bring your own audition sides, self-tape material, or use scenes we have here at the studio. One of my favorite ways to work is to start with a scene completely cold. Read it. Make a choice. Put it on camera.
Then come back later after you’ve had time to think about the character, understand the scene, and make more specific choices. Shoot it again and compare the footage. That comparison can teach you a lot.
Actors spend a lot of time preparing for auditions, but surprisingly little time actually practicing the audition process.
If you’re auditioning for film, television, commercials, or submitting self-tapes from San Antonio, you need opportunities to get comfortable performing under audition conditions. And you need to watch the footage back.
When you see yourself on camera, you start noticing things you would never catch while you’re performing. Maybe you blink constantly. Maybe your eyes move around too much. Maybe you’re adding unnecessary pauses, movements, or filler words. Maybe you’re trying so hard to “act” that you’re covering up what was already working.
None of those things are automatically wrong. The question is whether they’re helping the character and the scene. If they’re not, get rid of them.
Cold reading gets easier when you actually practice cold reading. That sounds obvious, but actors often wait until they have a real audition before testing those skills. That’s a terrible time to practice.
Our audition training sessions give actors a place to work on cold reading, self-tape auditions, scene analysis, character choices, and on-camera performance without the pressure of an actual casting opportunity being on the line. You can experiment. You can make the wrong choice. You can try something completely different on the next take. That freedom is where a lot of growth happens.
This might be the biggest part of the whole process. Everybody gets notes. Including me. During some of our sessions, I’ll get on camera and perform the scene myself. Then I let the actors give me notes.
That does two things.
First, it forces actors to put on their director hat and explain what they’re seeing. Learning how to give another actor useful feedback can make you much more aware of your own performances. Second, it makes me a better director. You might see something in my performance that I completely missed. I might see something in yours that you didn’t notice. Everybody gets better when the ego disappears. That’s what Dope Creative Studios is really about. Not sitting in a classroom talking about acting. Actually acting. Actually auditioning. Actually getting on camera.
Then watching it back, figuring out what worked, making adjustments, and doing it again.
